James is an experienced UK and European patent attorney who specialises in protecting cutting-edge chemistry inventions. Before entering the IP profession, James obtained a PhD in organic synthetic chemistry and worked in pharmaceuticals research for over six years, gaining extensive experience in organic synthesis and drug design.
James helps our clients protect their inventions by providing patentability assessments, preparing patent applications, and managing the prosecution of patent applications through to grant in Europe, the UK and worldwide. Through his work, James has established large international patent portfolios for our clients and has gained extensive knowledge of patent examination procedures around the world. James is also experienced in opposition and appeals proceedings at the EPO.
James uses his expertise in organic chemistry and his research experience to help European and US-based clients protect their inventions in the pharmaceuticals and life sciences fields, for example relating to new chemical entities (small molecules) and to second/further medical uses of known drugs based on new indications, patient genotypes, biomarker screening and new dosage forms. James also handles inventions in pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and novel crystalline forms of APIs, such as multicomponent crystal formulations.
Alongside his work for clients in organic and pharmaceutical chemistry, James has developed an interest and expertise in other fields of chemistry related to environmental sustainability and energy storage, for example sustainable carbon fibre-based products, novel high-performance battery materials, carbon capture processes, water-capture technologies, thermoelectric materials, dielectric heating susceptor polymers and electrochemical processes for the energy efficient production of feedstock chemicals.
