Outside of work, trainees at Appleyard Lees can enjoy a great calendar of charitable events, both in and out of the office. Through 2023, and early 2024, thanks to the efforts of our CSR champions, and the commitment and generosity of my colleagues and their friends and families across the country, the firm raised almost £3500 for Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity.
In the Manchester office, we started with the (very warm) Manchester 10k and continued through the year with a range of events including a games night, a steps challenge and a treasure hunt. These can be a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues, get a bit fitter or show off your Mario Kart skills, all while raising money for charity.
We’ve just wrapped up our 2023/24 charitable year with the annual bake-off competitions taking place in each office. Accompanied by a dress-down day, the Manchester office’s bake-off was well attended, and featured some magnificent cakes, biscuits, muffins and even a Bakewell tart! I’m pleased to report that my chemistry training paid off, and I won the prestigious Manchester trophy with my white chocolate and raspberry cake (recipe here if you want to try it out yourself). I did make my way through nearly all of the entries, and there was very strong competition.
Our newly announced charity of the year for 2024 is the Alzheimer’s Society, which funds support and research for people living with dementia. Up first is our April step challenge – hopefully we can beat last year’s total of 10.2 million steps!
