On Tuesday 20 February, I attended the Liverpool City Region Tech Climbers event with two fellow trainees, Jack Ashman and Jack Braithwaite. The event took place at the Pins Social Club in Liverpool with the purpose of announcing the nominees for the 2024 Liverpool City Region Tech Climbers Awards; the actual awards ceremony will be held later in the year. The purpose of these awards is to showcase the top-performing, and rising stars, of technology start-ups and scaleups based in Liverpool.
Upon arrival, we were given a short opportunity to network in the hall. We were then ushered towards the stage at the front of the hall, where the host proceeded to introduce the nominees for the two award categories, “The Main List” and “The Ones to Watch”.
“The Main List” category is intended to recognise companies that are excelling in product-led technology in the Liverpool region. The nominees ranged from companies developing digital tools to streamline the freight industry, to those using artificial intelligence to improve cardiology care. Employees from three of the nominated companies were invited on stage to discuss the background to their companies, the innovation, and the impact it has had both in the Liverpool region and nationally. A clear passion shared by all those who spoke was the need to increase employment opportunities and technology funding within the city of Liverpool.
“The Ones to Watch” category is intended to recognise up-and-coming businesses, which are on track for future success. As with the previous award category, there was a diverse array of companies, each showcasing a different and innovative product.

Following the announcement of the nominees, there was a further opportunity to network. The event was attended by a range of individuals including employees from tech companies, but also those from universities, tech accelerators and (of course) intellectual property firms. The event was one of many, which Appleyard Lees encourages trainees to attend in order to expand their network and keep up to date with the latest technology and innovation.
I look forward to seeing which of the trailblazing businesses wins top spot in each of the categories later in the year.
