Julia Gwilt

Partner

MA (Hons), Mathematics; Masters, Computer Science, CPA, EPA

Julia has worked in the patent profession in the Cambridge area for over twenty-five years and in January 2017 she opened our Cambridge office. She oversees the patent portfolios for a wide variety of direct clients.

Julia’s mathematics background is a natural fit to her work on software-implemented inventions including bioinformatics, machine learning and AI but also provides a springboard for working in other technological sectors. She enjoys a close working relationship with both Cambridge based and international clients to help them develop and implement their worldwide IP strategy.  She has also extensive experience in contentious matters such as European Patent Office (EPO) oppositions.

Following on from her ten-year role on the board which administers the examinations for entry into the UK patent profession, Julia is now Chair of the Professional Education Committee (PEC) for epi. PEC runs an extensive education programme for the 14,000 European patent attorneys (EPAs) who are members of epi as well as their trainee patent attorneys and paralegals. In this role, Julia has been heavily involved in the reform of the European qualifying examination. She also presents, as required, at the twice yearly epi Council meetings which is attended by representatives from the 39 EPC member states. This passion for training extends to helping clients understand more about intellectual property (IP) through personalised training programs.
