Hugh entered the profession in 1978 and joined Appleyard Lees in 1983. Jointly with Alastair Neill, Hugh leads our mechanical team within the firm.

Hugh has an extensive patent and trade mark practice, acting for small to medium businesses and large multinational companies.

Hugh has been an examiner for UK patent attorney final examinations, and a tutor for candidates for the European patent attorney qualifying examination (EQE). Hugh has also been a visiting lecturer at Leicester University on intellectual property and has given various talks on intellectual property matters for the BBC, at universities and elsewhere.

In the Prestigious Chambers & Partners law review, Appleyard Lees is described as "a strong, experienced player and an innovative and creative company", while Hugh gets a personal mention and is described as "simply fantastic. He really knows his stuff and is creative with it."
