Bob joined Appleyard Lees in 1988 and is responsible for the chemical team within the practice alongside Anthony Brierley. He handles a wide variety of work, much of it in the chemical field but still with some work in the mechanical field.

Bob has particular expertise in representing clients in opposition and appeal hearings before the European Patent Office. He also has experience in assisting large in house industrial patent teams manage their IP and advising on portfolio strategy including protecting rights and opposing third party rights.

Bob entered the profession in 1982 and, although holding a first class honours degree in Natural Sciences from University of Cambridge, initially trained in the mechanical field. From 1985 Bob worked for Shell International in London, where he handled chemical work in the healthcare, household products, polymer, speciality chemical areas and a variety of licensing work.

Bob has given many talks and presentations in the UK and overseas on various intellectual property matters and has had many articles published on the subject.

In 2009 Bob was elected as a member of our Management team who are responsible for the day to day operations of the firm.
