Bobby Smithson

Managing Partner

MChem, CPA, EPA, MRSC

“Bobby not only demonstrated a deep understanding of the legal and procedural aspects, but also an uncanny grasp of the technology and flaws presented in the patent being opposed.  Bobby provided us with indispensable guidance at every juncture and did so in his characteristically personable and approachable manner.  I must add that Bobby has an extraordinary comprehension of client expectations.”

– The Legal 500

Bobby Smithson works closely with in-house patent departments of large companies both in the UK and overseas.

Bobby manages a diverse range of international patent portfolios, often acting as a pseudo “in house” attorney for multinational clients. A major part of Bobby’s work involves advising on and handling high-profile oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office. His specialist knowledge and extensive experience help him secure favourable outcomes for his clients when opposing or defending a patent.

Bobby has a chemical background and has particular experience in polymers, coatings, and healthcare apparatuses. His practice includes patent work related to product inventions, novel polymers, compositions comprising existing polymers, and new operating processes. He has also drafted and successfully prosecuted patents for various complex mechanical inventions including engines and gearboxes.

Bobby is a visiting lecturer on intellectual property in chemistry at the University of Leeds and regularly speaks on patent matters nationally and internationally.

Bobby leads the equality, diversity and inclusivity initiatives at Appleyard Lees, having established the ED&I Focus Group and ED&I Ambassadors Group. He is a signatory to the IP Inclusive Leaders pledge and has been an active member of the Senior Leaders’ Diversity Think Tank since its inception.

Bobby is also on the Board of Governors at Driffield School and Sixth Form, the school he attended as a pupil (1990 – 1997). Bobby is passionate about supporting the school to serve its high proportion of disadvantaged pupils, and helping the school to achieve excellent outcomes for all pupils despite its rural location and comparatively limited local opportunities.
