Andrew is a Senior Associate in our Electronics & Software team and is based in our Manchester office. He has a particular interest in photonics and optics, having spent time as a research physicist at the Max Planck Institute in Munich. Later, in the profession, Andrew handled patent portfolios in this field for global corporations and for a leading university research department, and also handles subject matter in the defence, electronics, software and general engineering field, as well as registered and unregistered design rights.
Andrew works for a range of clients from multi-national corporations, to smaller businesses based in the North of England and Wales. He has experience of Hearings before the European Patent Office and frequently advises clients on contentious issues where their rights may be infringed or where they are accused of infringing the rights of others. He has successfully defended in a patent infringement dispute making quick and cost-effective use of simple European Patent Office procedures to lead to refusal of a threatening patent application, and to resolution of the dispute.
Before entering the patent profession, Andrew spent several years working as a patent examiner at the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO). This experience gives Andrew an insight into some of the workings of the UKIPO and the practical impact that can have on achieving a clients’ patent goals.
Andrew continues novel scientific research in the field of optics, his technical specialism, and an example this work appears in a leading, peer-reviewed scientific journal.
