Lots of everyday commercial items are protected under copyright laws - such as price lists, manuals, datasheets, databases, drawings, computer programs, screen layouts and design documents. You might not think of these as “artistic works” but they are often covered by copyright, along with many other creative works such as photographs, brochure artwork and advertising. Copyright is relevant to any business document that you have spend a lot of time and effort compiling or creating.

Copyright arrives automatically, as soon as a relevant piece of work is created.

It is important to keep good records to prove when, where and by who the work was created. A written copyright assignment is vital if you are dealing with consultants, out-sourced workers or creative agencies (e.g. designers, ad agencies, photographers). Also, to use copyright effectively, you will need to prove how the “bad guys” managed to copy the work, which means providing a chain that connects the copyright infringer to your original work. A few countries, e.g. USA, have a system for registering copyright works. Other countries, including UK and all the EU countries, do not have any form of copyright registration system. Again, we can arrange registration of copyright works in the countries where this is appropriate.
